Shigaraki ware is pottery made in Shigaraki Town, a mountain village in the heart of Honshu, Shiga Prefecture, south of Lake Biwa, at the base of the Suzuka Mountains, and within Koka City. Shigaraki ware has a long history spanning over 1,200 years, and has evolved in various ways to suit the lifestyles of each era. It includes everyday items such as tea ceremony utensils, earthenware pots, flower vases, braziers, flower pots, umbrella stands, tableware, and altar accessories. Even the well-known giant raccoon dog continues to evolve, taking advantage of the unique characteristics of the clay. We hope this tasteful, peaceful piece of pottery will become one of your favorites. It was designated a Traditional Craft by the government in 1976 (Showa 51).
Shigaraki Ware Tanuki
An adorable figure that embodies good fortune.
As stated in the proverb "Shigaraki Tanuki Hasso Enjo," this figurine is said to bring various blessings.
Furthermore, with the wish to "outshine others" based on the pun on the word "raccoon," they are often displayed in front of shops as lucky charms for prosperous business.
In 1951 (Showa 26), Emperor Showa was so impressed by the raccoon dog figurines lining the roads of Shigaraki during his imperial visit to the area that he composed a poem about them, which led to this Shigaraki specialty becoming popular nationwide.
