Product Introduction
Halberd Models "1/48 American McDonnell XF-85 Goblin Prototype Fighter" full resin kit.
The XF-85 Goblin was a prototype fighter developed during the Cold War as a parasite fighter (parent-child fighter) to be stored in the bomb bay of a B-36 and transported to the combat airspace to escort the B-36's ultra-long-range bombers invading Soviet territory.
Development of this aircraft began in September 1945, with a full-scale mockup completed in June 1946. Two prototypes were ordered as the XP-85 in February 1947.
The 4.52-meter-long, barrel-shaped fuselage featured a jet engine intake in the nose and a nozzle at the end of the fuselage, and the wings were swept back with a 34-degree sweep angle.
Flight test results led to the addition of directional stabilizers to the wingtips.
The first aircraft, completed in October 1947, was primarily used for wind tunnel testing, while the second aircraft, using an EB-29B Superfortress as a base aircraft, was used for flight tests from July 1948.
The second aircraft successfully completed its first free flight in August of that year, but failed to return to its base aircraft. It then successfully returned to its base aircraft on a second free flight in October.
The results of these flight tests indicated that it would not be easy to return it to its base aircraft, and due to the introduction of aerial refueling and the increased range of escort fighters, development of the aircraft was discontinued in 1949.
