The Special Type (Fubuki-class) destroyers were large destroyers built to meet the shipbuilding requirements of the Washington Naval Treaty, which imposed no restrictions on capital ships. They were equipped with more powerful armaments than conventional destroyers.
They surpassed the standards of destroyers of the time in every respect, making a strong impression on the navies of the major powers.
The fourth destroyer, Miyuki, was commissioned in 1929 and formed the 11th Destroyer Division with her sister ships Fubuki, Shirayuki, and Hatsuyuki.
